The winter chill is slowly going away, and the sun is finally starting to feel warm again. That can only mean one thing—it is time for Makar Sankranti! This is one of my favourite times of the year because the whole country feels so alive and full of energy.
I love how every street smells like roasted sesame and sweet jaggery. For Makar Sankranti 2026, let’s set aside our phones for a moment and bask in the bright blue skies. It is a day to be thankful for the food on our plates and the people in our lives.
Why We Celebrate Makar Sankranti Every Year
Have you ever wondered why we all get so excited when mid-January rolls around? It is because the earth is finishing its cold, dark cycle and moving toward warmer, brighter days. We celebrate this time to say a big “thank you” to nature for the sun and the fresh food we get from the fields. It is a time to let go of old worries and start fresh with a clean heart.

In 2026, we will celebrate Makar Sankranti on January 14th. This special day has a long history that goes back thousands of years. It marks the moment the sun enters the “Makara” or Capricorn sign, which means winter is ending. Long ago, our ancestors started this festival to honour the Sun God for a good harvest. Today, we keep that history alive by sharing sweets and flying kites together under the warm sun.
Traditional Makar Sankranti Recipes to Enjoy
Food is the best part of any festival, and this one is no different! We usually make treats that keep us warm and give us energy during the winter days. Most of these dishes use simple things like rice, Jiggery ( Guda (ଗୁଡ଼)), and coconut.
For Makar Sankranti, here are some tasty recipes we love to share with our friends:
- Makar Chaula: A fresh mix of new rice, milk, and ginger.
- Rasi Ladu: Sweet balls made from crunchy sesame seeds and Jiggery ( Guda (ଗୁଡ଼)).
- Chhena Poda: Our favourite baked cheese dessert that everyone loves.
- Pitha: Tasty steamed or fried cakes made from rice flour.
